Project - Create a story from your phone, iphone, ipod, ipad, or MP3 player

√ Hand Held Reports or Stories

We often forget that in our pockets or bags we have a small computer, camcorder, camera, mic and word processing machine all in our cell phones and pods. In today's fast society we are often witness to news stories but just stand by or maybe email a pic or short vid to a friend. What if we instead did a bit of reporting, got names, place, facts and created a news story from this eye-witness report.

What about our personal stories, chats with friends, talking with peers after sporting events, creating our own investigative reports on our surroundings, things we know about personally. Again, we have the tools but seldom use them.

For this project you will use only your hand held device. Think about what goes on around you. Events in your day. What do you want to know more about?

Create a plan as you would for any other video.

  • Where will it happen? plan to include the date and setting
  • What is your topic?
  • What questions will you ask? be specific, ask open ended questions, not ones that can be answered by yes  or no, draw out detail
  • Who will your interviewees be? plan to get names and their spelling
  • Why is this topic important? Is there an angle to your story? What?
  • What images do you want to collect to support your story
  • What video do you want to capture?
  • Who needs to hear this story? Who is your audience? Plan for them.

The key is being ready and prepared.

Here are some tips to taking better cell phone images:

Once you get your images, text, video and audio recording if you choose, you will put these all together as an email with attachments and send it to
